Regardless of the type of outdoor pond you create, there are a few things you need to be aware of that differ them from indoor habitats:

Above-ground ponds are also very popular as they are not permanent and can be moved if necessary. These can be a simple kiddie pool for a few baby turtles to a much larger enclosure. Livestock watering tanks are extremely popular. They are large, strong and designed to hold water. Often times they are hidden with landscaping stones or shrubbery.

The flexible liners can also be used in above-ground applications with an appropriate foundation.

Outdoor turtle ponds come in many types and sizes from a simple kiddie pool to a sophisticated concrete pond. The most popular in-ground types are the pre-formed liners and the flexible liner type. Both are available at most home improvement stores. The preformed type is probably the easiest to work with and the most durable. You simply dig a hole in the shape of the pre-formed liner. The liner provides the varying depths and shelves.

The flexible liner allows you to dig any custom shape you wish and they come in a lot of sizes from small to extremely large. The pre-formed is somewhat more expensive but may be well worth the investment in the long run.

Depending where you live, putting an aquatic turtle outdoors might be something you can only do for a few months in summer. You need to consider the natural range of the species you have. For example, red eared sliders, painteds and maps are quite hardy and adaptable. Some other species need warmer temperatures, so you must keep the natural habits of your turtle in mind when deciding to house them outdoors. In warmer climates aquatic turtles may be able to live outdoors year round. It is also possible to hibernate some species in an outdoor pond, although this is not without risk.

The most common outdoor habitat for a turtle is a garden pond or pen. While many of the requirements such as water quality, substrate, filtration and temperature are the same for outdoor habitats as they are for indoor habitats, there are some additional items you need to be aware of:

First of all, determine the location and the size of your turtle pond. The pond should be entertaining your sight, so choose the location where you can see it freely. It’s also important to make sure that you place the pond where leaves from trees, grass clippings, fertilizers and insecticides around your home will not end up in the pond. You should know that the size and depth of the pond should also accommodate the number, size and type of turtles you plan on keeping.

Turtle habitats can be of two types - indoor habitat or outdoor habitat. Indoor turtle habitats are quite similar to fish aquariums whereas the outdoor turtle habitats are similar to garden ponds. Both turtle habitats required certain things in order to make it a perfect place to live in for a turtle.

There are many different types of aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles that you can keep, such as Sliders, Painted Turtles, Mud Turtles, Musk Turtles, Cooters, Tortoises etc. In fact, there are over 300 known species and sub-species. While each species will have its own specific housing requirements that are necessary to promote proper health, there are basic guidelines that all aquatic and semi-aquatic turtle habitats adhere to, and the following tips will help you provide your aquatic turtle with a safe and comfortable habitat.
